@OrlandoBonsaiTV That's awesome. I had one in my yard that I dug up yesterday. It's a pretty massive stump,at least 6 or 7 inches across at the base. The surface roots are really thick too, and radiate out from the tree really? well. The weird thing is, I think it's actually two or three threes that have fused together. It has two big trunks and two sapling sized trunks, and I have no idea how that will work out lol.

This isn't really related to the subject of your video, but it was something I was wondering about, since you are also from Florida. I'm sort of starting out with bonsai, and I've been collecting a lot of wild material. Something I have seen a ton of in my areas are the Sugar hackberry trees. I like their twigginess and the way their? leaves change color. Have you ever seen, or created a hackberry bonsai?

I don't know much about bonsai but for? other plants or trees you need at least 1 gallon per vertical foot of growth, so if your tree is 2 feet tall then you need a 2 gallon pot.

@xzyeee If you are getting a lot of rain your tree may be devloping a fungus which would cause teh leaves? to yellow and even have irregular shapes. I would suggest aplying a systemic fungicide such as Halt which you can find at Home Depot or Lowes.

I am trying my hand at Bonsai and I am totally loving it. However, my candidates look a bit sick and I don't know what to do. They are sending out new shoots but I think they may be getting a bit too much water because we have been getting a lot of rain lately. There is one in particular that? @HouseholdStudios If you look along the roots of a? plant the roots come from the plant very big and get much finer near the ends. However it take a long time for that taper to occur. So but reducing the length of the roots the finer roots will occur where you cut so that you get the feeder roots closer to the tree. I hop ethat make sense

Hello, I really enjoyed this video. The tree is very beautiful and I liked it in the blue? pot. It looks more traditional and nice now. I live in Tampa & have been interested in Bonsai, but only purchased a couple of books, i.e. 101 & encyclopedia. I like the blue pot. Do you want to sell it? Root pruning is more about creating a turbo charged root system than it is about restricting? grown. Pruning the roots creates feeder roots closer to the trunk and thus makes a more efficient root system. The restriction of growth comes from being in a pot and having regular maintenance pruning done.

@KingKong1ooo I also add about 10% of a hardened clay (usually akadama or oildri). I also throw in some charcol (make it myself) to help keep the foliage nice and green. Making charcol is easy. I like to use shims that are used in construction for window and door frames. Basically you burn the wood until it is thoroughly burned (blackened). Then I? break it up into smaller chunks and sift out all the dust. I add about a 1/2 cup to 1 gallon of soil.

@KingKong1ooo 100% pure, sifted akadama is best for Acer palmatum cultivars. Junipers need SUPER drainage. They do NOT like wet roots. A good mix for junipers is 50% akadama and 50% orchid bark. A better mix would be 60% akadama and 40% orchid bark. The formula I use for my junipers is as follows. 60% decomposed granite in different sizes (I have a free? local source) 30% compost from my compost pile that has been boiled and then left in a VERY thin layer out in the sun(cont.)

yeah, i'm not too sure about this mate! Yamadori should really only be taken when the plant ( Tree) in question has some really interesting and Unique characreristics. The tree you took is pretty low quality, even with training. You may as well have gone to the local nursery. the plant you removed? had no inherent beauty, and i doubt very much you'll ever produce any out if THAT plant. I do love the concept of a bonsai hunters show, but perhaps you need to show a bit more wisdom in your material.

I used to have to "stick cuttings" for hours as punishment when I was a kid lol and sadly, never appreciated the art until I was much older and wiser. Would love to see some examples of your work. This video makes me sad. You would be much better off learning about bonsai that making some "hack up a tree in the wilderness" video.? Anyone who knows anything about bonsai will laugh at this - and not in a good way. Please make sure your info is spot on. Many? new hobbyists will take what you say as "gospel". I would suggest noting the future final silhouette of the tree as the branches you led on there were long. Happy to see more collecting videos though. A "scouting" video will be very helpful for others.

@JulieMint Thanks for your comment :) You only need to trim the tree when it begins to get out of shape. Some take multiple trimmings during the growing season and then they can go a long time before needing to? be trmmed back. Don't over do it, because you want to keep the tree healthy. Its easiest once the tree is in shape and full because all you are doing then is just controlling the growth. Good luck

I just got my new bonsai tree. It looks a bit full and bushy right now, so I'm planning on trimming it a bit. After that do I only need to trim it three or so times a year? Do you mean just trimming the actual branches a few? times a year and to trim the leaves when ever need be? I don't want to kill my tree by cutting it to pieces! Thanks for your help :)

@LacobrigusRomanicus Trees will grow in all different types of shapes.? It really depends on where they are growing., Along a cloastline they will be pushed by the wind and may twict and bend. A tree in the shade of another tree will lean as it reaches for the light. also a tree that has had its trunk damaged may start a new trunk taking the tree in a new direction

@missy19bond Yes Bonsai Trees are real trees and act just like their big relatives. Some trees don't it depends on the type of tree. Sounds like you have a decidulous type of tree (drops their leaves in the fall) If so cut your watering back to once? or twice a week, and in the spring it will put out a new set of leaves.

Hi, i was wondering if you could help me. I have a bonsai tree for a little under a year now and it's suddenly started dying, all its leaves are turning yellow. It's autumn now - do bonsai trees loose their leaves like other trees? I've watered it when it's started getting dry, but not too much. i've kept it indoors out of direct sunlight but in some light. I've pruned it a bit. The only thing i haven't done is re-potted it but i'm not? sure if i should or not? Any advice would be welcome

@MrWthisthis100 Microcarpa put put aerial roots when shoot from branches and the upper trunk. They don't produce leaves but grow over time to reach the soil. When they reach the soil they thicken up and provide water and nutrients to the tree the description you are giving sounds like aerial roots instead of braches. @Iggynawcio I've had chinese elms? that sometimes don't drop their leaves all winter. However if you have work to do on that tree you can pull the leaves off now since it should be dormant. It's called 'forced dormancy' you can repot, wire, prune and then the new set of leaves will pop in the Spring

@mw2ak47pro As you begin leaf reduction you promote better secondary branches to form in smaller areas which means more leaves but smaller sizes. So leaf reduction will hold however from time to time you will get full sized leaves but just pinch them off. ? Also if you develope new branches your leaves will be larger, but when teh branch is the right size just do the process to get the leaves smaller. Larger pot will promote faster growth so the leave may revert back until you reduce them

@mw2ak47pro I have never heard of a rose bush being used as a bonsai, however there are dwarf versions of them. Generally we look for plants with woody trunks. Leaves can be reduced but flowers and fruits will? always be full size.

Hello. I live in northeren Ohio. I have a pink rose bush in my back yard. Its about 4ft high and not very wide. Ive only every seen 2 to 3 roses on it. It has a very nice truck and surface roots. @tomdangerlloyd no you cannot treat blakc pines? (or any pine) like this. You reduce the length of pine needles through a process of removing the candles in late summer. I haven't done a video on this yet, but if you search the internet on removing candle from black pines bonsai you will find all kinds of explainations

The maple in the training box at the? end is a Shishigashira cultivar. The lower branches on the rear of this tree had weakened dramatically during the previous summer, so it was potted into this wooden box to allow better draining and oxygen penetration to the root system. I was a bit skeptical about moving it into this container as we had just repotted six months prior into a ceramic pot and I thought the branches would die for sure if we changed it again. BUT it turned out for the best

I do not think I have ever seen a wooden bonsa pot before, and it immediately caught my eye. Is this some kind of training pot? What do you know of wood being used in pots in Japan of anything? @MonkeyBros64 there are ceramic statues to enhance the impression just for that purpose :D I missed moving critters as well though haha. oh and you can combine it with suiseki (beautiful stones that sort of create an image by its natural structure) to create an entire landscape in your bedroom :D I pity all the beautiful trees I destroyed in my? infantile phase many years ago D: I think I broke the heart of my father haha.

I would like to say that I have watched many of Graham's videos and that the work Graham does on trees is amazing. I know some of you think that it is "Brutal" and/or unnatural to do some? of the things he does. The tree here isn't being murdered, it is alive and well. He knows when to quit and he rests his trees for many years sometimes if the tree needs it. The imagination and vision of this artist (Graham) is what makes his Bonsai a style of his own and some of the most beautiful pieces of art

@CARBOMBTASTIC In short the answer is yes. But it need to be an herb that has a woody "trunk" like rosemary or thyme. I have a nice little shohin? rosemary that sits nicely in my kitchen window all winter (outside in summer of course). Actually you can use any type of wire you want that will hold the branch. Cooper and aluminum is readily available. I like the copper because it "blends in" better with the tree trunk.

Watch the 'Art of Bonsai' series - beautiful trees that look like trees - then look at that nurseries 'for export' list - all shiny white pine/juniper sharis/jins that look like gloss paint ! Exposed wood in nature turns a soft grey, and the foliage doesn't look like it's been visited by a hedge-trimmer. You WILL get? some naturally incredible twisted trunks and branches, but 'we' then turn them into something very man-made.

@Sk8club08 I read it's best to put it by a window sill to the south, because that's the direction the sun is, and it'll get the most light. East and west are second best, but don't put it by a window to the north, or else you'll have to get extra lights. Hi, i was wondering if you could help me. I have a bonsai tree for a little under a year now? and it's suddenly started dying, all its leaves are turning yellow. It's autumn now - do bonsai trees loose their leaves like other trees? I've watered it when it's started getting dry, but not too much. i've kept it indoors out of direct sunlight but in some light. I've pruned it a bit. The only thing i haven't done is re-potted it but i'm not sure if i should or not? Any advice would be welcome

ok thanks, secondly, ive gone out to the forest and found a good patch of moss. I gently removed it and placed it on the soil of my bonsai. I dont think i did it right because the moss died and it didnt help at all. Im very new at this and i would really appriciate it if you could? answer these quick questions: 1. Thanks for the vid. I tend to err on the inorganic side, for aeration and fast draining since my bonsai are out all the time. I recommend with the inorganic mixes REGIMENTED and STRICT fertilizing and watering.? My mix is Lava, Pumice, Pine Bark fines, Akadama (two line), and Turface MVP, equal portions.

The CFL Bonsai Club site lists Pebble Junction as a source for materials but all I found was normal-sized lava rock. They also didn't have crushed granite? (found as chicken scratch at Tractor Supply Inc).

@engelwyre The Turface MVP is what I use as well. Some times it is hard to find the crushed Lava rock, but there? are a few places in Florida where you can find it. Possibly Wigerts Bonsai N Fort Myre or Jim's Smiths In Vero Beach.

@solecisticyouth666 Well let's start by actually looking at the tree that you have and make a decision based upon what Procumbens nana likes. These junipers want water when the soil is moderately dry (to a depth of 1/2 to 1 inch) but should not? let the soil dry out completely. So that tells me that the tree needs air flow to keep the roots cool and somewhat lightly moist. They do not want to be wet. use a soil similar to what I show in my video. Make sure your tree gets full sun as well.

Thanks Gerard, I'm always working to improve my videos however the sound is driving me a little crazy. In any case a great type of tree to start with in Florida is the Ficus Nerifolia. it is very? forgiving and develops quickly. Additionally the leaves are perfectly in scale for bonsai. Do you have? any advice on caring for a Gardenia Bonsai? I don't think I'm doing a good job. The soil is always very dry, even shortly after watering it, but it seems that when I water it more often, the leaves turn brown and fall off. Help, please. Thank you.

@lizbethk1 Plum, cherry, apricot, quince, and pear are among the more popular bonsai subjects, and no the fruit are not smaller. In fact fruit trees tend to be bonsai subjects for their flowers. After flowering, the flowers are pulled off. The exception being crabapple and some trees in which the artist wants a fruit ot? two to justapose the tree with. Do a Google images of the subjects I mention here to see.

@b4m1as .....less water esp in colder temperatures/seasons, also with it being winter months (depending on where your from) you may need to relocate its position to give it a little more? light.(not too much direct sunlight though.)if you find that the soil is in need of water still every day or so you made need to think about repotting as bonsai stems can use up much of the valuable nutrients in the soil. i'm not an expert...these are just a couple of problems ive encountered with my bonsai.

Once you get ready to put the Juniper in a bonsai pot, you can prune the roots. I wouldn't suggest doing it until then. If you go to Books-A-Million, you can find some helpful books to teach you how to prune and the right time to do so. As far as yamadori, yeah, it's best not to go getting trees off of other folks' property. But you can find lots of acceptable trees just growing in random places. Just remember, this stuff? takes a looooooong time.

First you would need a permit, or authorization from a landowner. It is also extremely difficult to maintain that bonsai's life, its fine root tips are damaged and you would have to gradually reduce its size after a prolonged acclimization period.(Younger trees have more roots w/less fine tips. Overall I would recommend that you start with nursery specimen. Try to just keep that alive, then when you know that you can water and care for it, think about collecting any? of these beauties.

Just have to find the right "yamadori" - tree from the wild. Make sure you get the roots, then just prune away what you don't want. Besides that, you have to understand that it takes years (10, all? the way to 100s for really old trees) for these people to sculpt these trees. Stay patient and keep looking. Good luck.
